Jenny Valle, ASID, IIDA, Interior Designer at Toms-Price in Lincolnshire, shares her professional secrets.
The living room is usually the first room your guests see and the room in which you and your family spend the most time. First impressions are so important. That’s why you want your living room to be absolutely picture-perfect, a positive, unique reflection of you. Naturally, you want to love it. I’m a firm believer in the vibe you give off is the vibe you live!
1. Let the light in!
Paint, fabrics and accessories can brighten a room, but there’s nothing like natural light. Lighten up your living room by letting as much natural light in as possible. Avoid heavy draperies and consider using gauzy, lighter window treatments that will give you privacy but still let the light in. Light gray Collin chairs, by Jessica Charles, are shown below.
2. Small details make the difference
Add accessories with bits of detail. A large coffee table book is a great way of showing your hobbies and interests to guests. Think about displaying articles on both your coffee table and on side tables from travels, nature, fashion or another area that inspires you. Small florals can also liven up your space. Be sure not to overdo it though. Too many accessories can be distracting to the eye.
3. Add color
Even if you’re a fan of neutrals, you can add a splash of color without it being overwhelming. Whether the boost of color is on pillows, artwork or accessories, a dab of blue, green and even yellow can make your space go from dull to exciting! Take a look at pillows from Global Views here.
4. Love = accessories
Get accentuating frames and place pictures of people and/or things you love in them. Surround yourself in love with pictures of family members, your favorite hobbies or places that have a special place in your heart. The pictures will, in turn, inspire you and maybe even your guests. The Massena framed photo collage shown below comes as a set of seven.
5. Get cozy
Warm up your living room by adding a throw on the sofa or a chair or a fuzzy carpet on the floor. Choosing items with some texture will add an energetic punch to your space and maybe even enhance the room’s fun factor. The rug departments at Toms-Price are full of interesting rug choices.
6, Statement lighting
Adding the right statement chandelier in your living room can literally add extra flare to your space, just the “wow” factor you’ve been looking for. Of course, incorporating recessed, down-lighting at night will fill the room with warmth. This chandelier from Maitland-Smith may be ordered through Toms-Price.
7. Differentiate your walls
There are a lot of ways to differentiate your walls. One way is to make one of your walls an accent wall, choosing a different color from the rest. Another way is instead of using another painting on an open wall in your living room, opt for a mirror with artwork on it. A little bit of a twist can make your living room as unique as you are! Showing below are the Tamarind Mirrors by John Richard.
I am very thankful that I get to help clients design their spaces. Whether it’s a big project or a small one, I would be happy to assist you in creating your dream home. I am only a phone call or an email away for any questions you might have!
